Amoako Boafo Paints an Honest Narrative of the World
Ahead of his show at the Norton Museum of Art, “Strike Fast, Dance Lightly” (October 26, 2024–March 9, 2025), Boafo shared with Whitewall what returning to Vienna means to him and how he’s expanding his practice to include new mediums to honor texture, time, and technique.








Amoako Boafo, a Ghanaian artist renowned for his evocative portraiture, has been a pivotal figure in contemporary art, capturing the essence of Black identity and experience. His recent exhibitions, "Proper Love" at Vienna's Belvedere Museum (October 25, 2024–January 12, 2025) and "Strike Fast, Dance Lightly" at the Norton Museum of Art (October 26, 2024–March 9, 2025), showcase his evolution as an artist and his deep connection to the cities that have shaped his journey.
"Proper Love" marks Boafo's first solo exhibition in Europe, a significant milestone that brings him back to Vienna, where he honed his craft at the Academy of Fine Arts. This exhibition not only highlights his growth but also places his work in dialogue with Austrian masters like Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt, emphasizing the universal themes of identity and self-perception.
In "Strike Fast, Dance Lightly," Boafo expands his artistic repertoire by exploring new mediums and techniques, delving into the textures and nuances of his subjects. This exhibition reflects his commitment to portraying honest narratives, capturing the complexities of human emotion and the subtleties of cultural identity.
